1 November 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a report, titled “Keeping Track of Our Changing Environment: From Rio to Rio+20,” which provides comprehensive statistical data illustrating environmental changes to the planet since the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED, or Rio Earth Summit), and ahead of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
November 2011: Published by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the November issue of the Aichi Targets Newsletter includes several articles on regional and national processes for the revision of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), among other topics.
31 October 2011: The seventh meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) opened in Montreal, Canada, on Monday, 31 October 2011.
October 2011: The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has released its Strategic Framework for 2011-2015. One of the five strategic objectives of the Framework relates to improving resiliency for rural men and women to climate change, environmental degradation and market transformation, with a focus on both climate change adaptation and mitigation.
14 October 2011: At its annual conference, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) formally endorsed the UN Decade on Biodiversity and decided to develop a framework to guide the participation of zoos and aquariums in the achievement of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020.
Biodiversity is a hot topic these days – a simple Google search will give you around 46 million results. But, what is biodiversity? It is a word coined to refer to the variety of all living things on Earth – all the species, genetic resources and ecosystems on the planet and how they function and interact. Biodiversity is the cornerstone of life in the Pacific – our plants, animals, and ecosystems are essential for livelihoods of Pacific people. Biodiversity has helped shape our culture and traditions.
4 October 2011: Biodiversity experts and officials from across the Pacific region met in two workshops to promote national implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, and the Convention on Biological Diversity's (CBD) Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA). The two workshops were held in parallel from 3-7 October 2011, in Nadi, Fiji.
29 September 2011: The Ministerial Declaration of the Group of 77 and China, adopted on 23 September 2011 in New York, recognizes the important outcomes of the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the fifth meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, and calls for implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020.
This workshop is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the City of Montpellier and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability. It is part of a series of regional and sub-regional capacity-building workshops aiming to: strengthen national capacities for the development, implementation, review, updating and communication of national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs); help facilitate national implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020; and generate national targets and commitments. In addition, it aims to strengthen local and sub-national governance of biodiversity in the Mediterranean; establish links between local policies and national biodiversity strategies; and establish a Mediterranean network of cities engaged in biodiversity, which would support national-level implementation of the CBD.
The purpose of this workshop is to strengthen national capacities for the development, implementation, review, updating and communication of national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs); help facilitate national implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020; and translate the Strategic Plan into national targets and commitments.
