UNEP Report Points to Cropland Expansion as Driver of Biodiversity Loss [viewed]

UNEP16 January 2013: A new report on Crop Expansion and Conservation Priorities in Tropical Countries, published in the journal PLoS One and involving scientists from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), analyzes crop distribution and expansion in 128 tropical countries and maps overlaps between conservation priorities and cultivation potential. The paper highlights the threat to biodiversity from the expansion of agricultural lands.

Event: CBD Workshop on the Inter-Linkages between Human Health and Biodiversity in Africa [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the WHO regional office for Africa, this regional capacity-building workshop will provide a forum for parties and experts from the health and biodiversity sectors to: discuss the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, in particular as it relates to health issues; discuss regional best practices in terms of incorporating biodiversity and health considerations in national and regional biodiversity conservation programmes; strengthen capacity and identify further capacity needs for the implementation of the Strategic Plan; identify possible joint activities to achieve health and biodiversity co-benefits for consideration in national biodiversity strategies and action plans; and promote trans-boundary/regional cooperation and support networks on health and biodiversity issues and strategies.
