Event: CBD COP 11 High Level Segment [viewed]

As determined by the host of the meeting, the Minister of Environment & Forests of India, the high-level segment of the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will focus on: implementation of the Strategic Plan on Biodiversity 2011-2020; biodiversity for livelihoods and poverty reduction; coastal and marine biodiversity; and implementation of the Nagoya Protocol on access to genetic resources and benefit-sharing.

IUCN World Conservation Congress Adopts Jeju Declaration, Elects New President [viewed]

15 September 2012: The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress elected Zhang Xinsheng of China as the new President of IUCN, during the Congress held in Jeju, Republic of Korea. Before closing, the 2012 Congress also approved the IUCN Programme for 2013-2016, adopted several other motions, and adopted the Jeju Declaration on "nature-based solutions."

ASEAN and India Ministers Issue Statement Ahead of CBD COP 11 [viewed]

13 September 2012: Environment ministers from Member States of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and India held a meeting on 7 September 2012, in New Delhi, India, and adopted the "New Delhi ASEAN-India Ministerial Statement on Biodiversity." The statement has been circulated as an information document in preparation for the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Event: Summit on Island Innovations: Celebrating Bright Spots, Leadership and Successes in Island Conservation and Sustainable Livelihoods [viewed]

This island summit will be held on the margins of the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in close collaboration with Grenada, Palau and Seychelles as co-chairs of the Global Island Partnership (GLISPA) and with financial support from Japan. The event will focus on implementation of the CBD programme of work on island biodiversity (PoWIB) and achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, and will provide a platform to mobilize support for further actions to promote the conservation and sustainable use of island biodiversity.

IPBES-1 Provisional Agenda Announced [viewed]

13 September 2012: The provisional agenda has been circulated for the first plenary meeting of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-1). IPBES-1 will be hosted by the Government of Germany, and take place in Bonn, Germany, from 21-26 January 2013. Regional and stakeholder consultations will take place on 20 January 2013.

LMMA Network Gathers at World Conservation Congress [viewed]

10 September 2012: A workshop held on 10 September 2012, in Jeju, Republic of Korea, addressed cost-effective ways to tackle challenges in community marine conservation. The event was convened the sidelines of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress, by the UN Environmental Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), Blue Ventures, CORDIO and the Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMA) Network.

Event: Land Day 6 [viewed]

Land Day 6 will consider the theme “Land Degradation Neutrality - A Response to the 2020 Aichi Targets”. It will take place on 15 October 2012, at the Rio Conventions Pavilion, which is being orgainzed in parallel to the meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The speakers at Land Day 6 will showcase the benefits of synergetic implementation of the Rio Conventions using successful initiatives that simultaneously conserve biodiversity and restore degraded land. Land Day 6 will, in particular, offer an opportunity to consider the relationship between the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and the implementation of the UNCCD's 10-Year Strategic Plan and Framework to enhance the implementation of the Convention (2008-2018).

Event: CBD Regional Workshop on the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation and the Strategic Plan [viewed]

This workshop aims to build capacity and share experiences in implementation of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation in the framework of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, Central America and Mexico. It is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in collaboration with Botanic Gardens Conservation International, Mexico's National Commission for Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO) and the Botanical Garden of the Biology Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

Event: IPBES-1 [viewed]

The first meeting of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-1) will be hosted by the Government of Germany. The meeting will aim to agree on the remaining rules of procedures for the meetings of the platform, consider other rules of procedure for the platform, elect Bureau and Multidisciplinary Expert Panel members, and agree on the next steps by which the IPBES work programme can become operational as soon as possible. IPBES-1 will be a meeting of Members of the Platform's plenary, with observers. Regional and stakeholder consultations will take place one day prior to the meeting, on 20 January 2013.
