Event: CBD Regional Workshop on the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation and the Strategic Plan [viewed]

This workshop aims to build capacity and share experiences in implementation of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation in the framework of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, Central America and Mexico. It is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in collaboration with Botanic Gardens Conservation International, Mexico's National Commission for Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO) and the Botanical Garden of the Biology Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

Event: IPBES-1 [viewed]

The first meeting of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-1) will be hosted by the Government of Germany. The meeting will aim to agree on the remaining rules of procedures for the meetings of the platform, consider other rules of procedure for the platform, elect Bureau and Multidisciplinary Expert Panel members, and agree on the next steps by which the IPBES work programme can become operational as soon as possible. IPBES-1 will be a meeting of Members of the Platform's plenary, with observers. Regional and stakeholder consultations will take place one day prior to the meeting, on 20 January 2013.

UNEP-WCMC/IUCN Report Highlights Growth in Protected Areas [viewed]

7 September 2012: A new report finds that protected areas are growing in number and coverage of the earth's surface. The First Edition of the Protected Planet Report was compiled through a collaborative effort between the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and released during the fifth World Conservation Congress, on 7 September 2012.

Event: Third Meeting of the Signatories to the MOU for the Conservation of Cetaceans and their Habitats in the Pacific Islands Region [viewed]

The objectives of the Third Meeting of Signatories to the Memorandum of Understanding for the Conservation of Cetaceans and their Habitats in the Pacific Islands Region will be to adopt the SPREP regional Whale and Dolphin Action Plan 2013-2017 for the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU); review the status of implementation of the MoU and the Action Plan; set future priorities for the MoU; and discuss strengthened collaboration at the national, regional and international level for the implementation of the MoU and Action Plan.

High-level Panel on Resources for Strategic Plan Conducts Online Consultation [viewed]

CBD2 August 2012: The High-level Panel on Global Assessment of Resources for Implementing the Strategic Plan (HLP-GAR), established under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and sponsored by the UK and India, held an online consultation on 2 August 2012. The consultation aims to start the Panel's work in a transparent manner, and provide CBD Parties with the opportunity to exchange views on the subject.

GEF Supports Biodiversity in Palm Cropping in Colombia [viewed]

GEF21 July 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has announced that it is providing a grant of US$4.25 million to implement biodiversity-friendly agro-ecological practices in palm cropping in the northern and eastern regions of Colombia. The project is expected to reduce the percentage of new palm-growing areas that encroach on protected land, increase the surface area in palm-production units of protected land, and support small-scale palm producers.

Event: Regional Workshop (Middle East and North Africa) on Updating NBSAPs [viewed]

Organized by Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD ), in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme - Regional Office of West Asia (UNEP-ROWA), the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman, the League of Arab States, and the Biodiversity Indicators Partnership, the Regional Workshop for the Middle East and North Africa on Updating National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) will assist countries from the Middle East and North Africa in revising and updating their NBSAPs in line with the framework of the CBD Strategic Plan. The workshop will focus on: target setting, stakeholder engagement and the development of country-specific plans for mobilizing financial resources for the implementation of NBSAPs; and the use of biodiversity indicators to monitor biodiversity at national and regional levels in the context of monitoring progress towards the global Aichi Biodiversity Targets.

European Parliament Publishes Report of IPBES Briefing [viewed]

2 July 2012: At a briefing session on the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) held at the European Parliament, participants recognized that scientific research is an essential foundation for the implementation of any biodiversity policy. The report of the briefing has been published by the EP Intergroup on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development, and circulated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

GLISPA Establishes Island Summit Working Group [viewed]

22 May 2012: The Global Island Partnership (GLISPA) has established a Working Group to plan for the Island Summit, to be held during the 11th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The Working Group is open to individuals, organizations and countries able to commit in-kind or financial resources to support the preparations and coordination of the Island Summit.
