5 May 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has invited Parties from the Central and Eastern European Region, as well as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, to nominate one representative each to participate in a regional workshop on the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. The workshop will take place in Slovenia in June 2011.

29 April 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has announced a regional capacity-building workshop for National Focal Points of the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI). The workshop for countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will be held in Manila, the Philippines, on 22 June 2011.

This workshop is organized by the CBD Secretariat in collaboration with the ASEAN Center for Biodiversity. Its objective is to strengthen national capacities in taxonomy based on the needs assessment conducted for the region in 2009, and to facilitate the implementation of the programme of work for the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI) in harmony with the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020.

This meeting will seek to validate the process and roadmap for the adoption of the Multi-Year Plan of Action for South-South Cooperation on Biodiversity for Development at the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the CBD. It will also: determine best practices on modalities of South-South cooperation in support of the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020; identify and facilitate potential South-South and triangular collaborative partnerships with international organizations, UN bodies and NGOs; and discuss the establishment of a network of centres of excellence on South-South cooperation on biodiversity for development.

21 April 2011: The 19th meeting of the Plants Committee (PC 19) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) convened from 18-21 April 2011, in Geneva, Switzerland. At its first meeting since the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to CITES in March 2010, the Committee laid out the groundwork for responding to the multiple mandates received from the Conference.
