28 March 2011: The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has organized a workshop for the Eastern European region on the national and regional implications of the Strategic Plan 2011-2020 and the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS). The workshop took place on 25 March 2011, in Kiev, Ukraine.
29 March 2011: The sixth session of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM), the Governing Body of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), agreed on the strategic objectives for its new Strategic Framework and decided to revise further the Framework for adoption at CPM 7.
23 March 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is accepting nominations of participants for two capacity-building workshops for West Africa, taking place in Dakar, Senegal, from 22-26 May 2011. One of the parallel workshops will focus on implementation of the CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA), and the other will address updating and revision of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) for West African countries.
23 March 2011: The implementation of a Global Environment Facility (GEF) project has led to the creation of the Bio-Guinea Foundation, a conservation trust fund in Guinea-Bissau supporting management and conservation in protected areas.
22 March 2011: Representatives from 30 companies joined the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) for a workshop on "biodiversity for Quebec-based enterprises."
14 March 2011: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is funding the second phase of the Amazon Region Protected Areas Project (ARPA), further to a successful first phase that allowed the designation of 24 million hectares as new protected areas and consolidated or established management and enforcement systems for over eight million hectares of the new protected areas.
15 March 2011: In the February Issue of its Monthly Bulletin, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) highlights several recent activities, including the opening for signature of the Nagoya Protocol.
14 March 2011: Speaking at the opening of the Southern Africa Regional Capacity-Building Workshop (SARC) on updating National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), stressed that protecting biodiversity means protecting the essence of peoples and cultures.
7 March 2011: IUCN launched Europe Overseas Forum, an email discussion group, hosted on Google Groups, for those interested in advancing biodiversity and climate change action in the Outermost Regions and Overseas Countries and Territories of the European Union (EU).
4 March 2011: The Secretariats of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) met via video conference, on 2 March 2011, to review joint achievements and map out their future collaboration.
