24 June 2011: The UN Open-ended Informal Consultative Process (ICP) on Oceans and the Law of the Sea has completed its meeting on the theme “contributing to the assessment, in the context of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), of progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development and addressing new and emerging challenges.”
23 June 2011: The number of signatories to the Convention on Biological Diversity's (CBD) Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) has reached 37, following recent signatures by Gabon, Mauritania and Ghana, as well as by the European Union (EU) and 12 of its member States.
The initial discussions on the "zero draft" of the Outcome Document for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) will take place from 25-27 January 2012, based on a decision taken by the UNCSD Bureau at its meeting on 22 December 2011. The zero draft will be based on a compilation of the input received by the UNCSD Secretariat from member States and other stakeholders by 1 November 2011.
22 June 2011: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has elected by acclamation Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser (Qatar) to be its next President. He will succeed Joseph Deiss (Switzerland) when he takes over the presidency in mid-September 2011 as the 66th session of the Assembly begins.
20 June 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has announced that the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the CBD will be held from 8-19 October 2012, in Hyderabad, India.
21 June 2011: Acting on the recommendation of the Security Council, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) has unanimously appointed UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for a second five-year term beginning 1 January 2012.
16 June 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has invited reports on parties' progress in raising issues related to gaps and inconsistencies in the international regulatory framework on invasive alien species (IAS) to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
June 2011: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has released a report of the Secretary-General on “Oceans and the Law of the Sea,” ahead of the 12th meeting of the UN Open-ended Informal Consultative Process (ICP) on Oceans and the Law of the Sea.
