Morocco to be 161st Party to Biosafety Protocol [viewed]

29 April 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has announced that Morocco has deposited its instrument of ratification of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety on 25 April 2011. It will thus become the 161st Party to the Protocol on 24 July 2011.

Event: Fourth High Level Forum: The Path to Effective Development [viewed]

The Fourth High Level Forum of Development Assistance Committee (DAC) donors and developing country signatories to the Paris Declaration of 2005 will take place in Busan, Republic of Korea, from 29 November-1 December 2011. Ministers and specialists will evaluate progress made since the third High Level Forum in 2008 and set out a new framework for increasing the quality of aid in order to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals by 2015. Priority areas for the forum will be: predictable aid; use of country systems; an end to policy conditionality; country-driven capacity development; mutual accountability; and reduced transaction costs.

WHO Members Reach Agreement on Virus Sharing, Access to Vaccines for Global Influenza Preparedness [viewed]

UNEP Announces Focus for Annual MEA Negotiation Course [viewed]

4 April 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that, together with the University of Eastern Finland (UEF), it is organizing its eighth annual course on international environmental law-making and diplomacy. The course is scheduled to take place from 4-16 September 2011, in Bangkok, Thailand, with a thematic focus on "Synergies among Biodiversity-Related Conventions."

EU Parliament Committee Votes for GMO Cultivation Bans on Environmental Grounds [viewed]

12 April 2011: The Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety of the European Parliament amended a proposal by the EU Commission that will allow EU member States to restrict or ban the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crop varieties, on environmental grounds.

Event: Multi-Disciplinary Workshop on the Common Fisheries Policy [viewed]

The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism is organizing this event, which is aimed at bring together stakeholders in the Caribbean region's fisheries sector to review and endorse the Revised Agreement on the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Common Fisheries Policy. The workshop is expected to be the final technical conference to negotiate the framework agreement establishing the Common Fisheries Policy.

FAO Creates Partnership for Mediterranean Forests [viewed]

6 April 2011: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has created a new partnership with 11 other organizations and institutions to tackle the threats of climate change facing forests in the Mediterranean region. The announcement came during the Second Mediterranean Forest Week, held from 5-8 April 2011, in Avignon, France.
