UNFF CLI Addresses Challenges of Sustainable Forest Management [viewed]

10 March 2011: The Governments of Japan and Indonesia co-hosted an international seminar entitled "Challenges of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM): Integrating Environmental, Social and Economic Values of Forests." The seminar, a Country-Led Initiative (CLI) in support of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF), was held in Tokyo, Japan from 8-10 March, as a collaborative initiative for the 2011 International Year of Forests.

CMS Meeting Urges Stronger Protection for Gorillas [viewed]

Event: CBD Sub-regional Capacity-building Workshop for West Africa on Implementation of the Programme of Work on Protected Areas [viewed]

The objective of the workshop is to build capacity to: create a national action plan for implementation of the Programme of Work on Protected Areas; access funding based on these action plans; and strengthen implementation of the Programme of Work on the themes of governance, climate change (including integrating protected areas into the wider land and seascape), sustainable financing, and valuation of the costs and benefits of protected areas, with a focus on marine protected areas where applicable.

Event: Governance for Forests, Nature and People [viewed]

This training course will focus on multi-stakeholder governance design in forested landscapes. Themes to be addressed include: globalization, increased resource extraction, climate change, collaborative learning, and reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD). The course is organized by the Centre for International Forestry Research and Wageningen University.

UNEP Report Highlights Role of State Leadership in MPA Governance [viewed]

Event: Fourth Session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention [viewed]

This meeting is the fourth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the UN Economic Commission on Europe (UNECE) Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention). It will seek to provide an opportunity to discuss public participation in international forums, the procedure for accession to the Convention by States from outside the UNECE region, and the role of the Aarhus Convention in promoting sustainable development. The latter is the theme of the high-level segment on 1 July 2011. The meeting is expected to adopt the draft Chisinau Declaration on the role of the Aarhus Convention in promoting sustainable development, as a contribution to the UNCSD process.
