10 March 2011: The Governments of Japan and Indonesia co-hosted an international seminar entitled "Challenges of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM): Integrating Environmental, Social and Economic Values of Forests." The seminar, a Country-Led Initiative (CLI) in support of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF), was held in Tokyo, Japan from 8-10 March, as a collaborative initiative for the 2011 International Year of Forests.
31 March 2011: An international meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, organized by the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), has called for better enforcement of wildlife law in the 10 countries in Africa with gorilla populations.
The objective of the workshop is to build capacity to: create a national action plan for implementation of the Programme of Work on Protected Areas; access funding based on these action plans; and strengthen implementation of the Programme of Work on the themes of governance, climate change (including integrating protected areas into the wider land and seascape), sustainable financing, and valuation of the costs and benefits of protected areas, with a focus on marine protected areas where applicable.
30 March 2011: The European Union (EU) is providing 3.1 million Euros to a project on "Environmental Governance to Prevent Deforestation and Promote Forest Conservation of the Colombian Amazon."
This training course will focus on multi-stakeholder governance design in forested landscapes. Themes to be addressed include: globalization, increased resource extraction, climate change, collaborative learning, and reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD). The course is organized by the Centre for International Forestry Research and Wageningen University.
28 March 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released the eighth issue of "Biosafety Protocol News." Marking the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, the issue highlights examples of cooperation among Parties and relevant organizations in the Protocol's implementation.
March 2011: A recent UN Environment Programme (UNEP) report, titled "Governing Marine Protected Areas: Getting the Balance Right," highlights the growing recognition in governance debates of the need to move beyond ideological arguments as to which approach is "best" or "right," and to instead develop governance models, frameworks and approaches that combine the role of states, markets and people.
15 March 2011: In the February Issue of its Monthly Bulletin, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) highlights several recent activities, including the opening for signature of the Nagoya Protocol.
16 February 2011: The fourth meeting of the Issue Management Group (IMG) on Biodiversity convened in Geneva, Switzerland, on 16 February 2011, to discuss its approach to implementing decisions taken by the Environment Management Group (EMG) Senior Officials on biodiversity.
This meeting is the fourth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the UN Economic Commission on Europe (UNECE) Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention). It will seek to provide an opportunity to discuss public participation in international forums, the procedure for accession to the Convention by States from outside the UNECE region, and the role of the Aarhus Convention in promoting sustainable development. The latter is the theme of the high-level segment on 1 July 2011. The meeting is expected to adopt the draft Chisinau Declaration on the role of the Aarhus Convention in promoting sustainable development, as a contribution to the UNCSD process.
