FAO and Partners Release Review of Illegal Hunting and Bushmeat Trade in Africa [viewed]

FAO12 October 2012: Underscoring key drivers and impacts of the bushmeat trade, as well as solutions to address the problem, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and international partners have released a review of bushmeat in African savannas, which it says has not received the attention it deserves. The report highlights the impact of the issue on large carnivore populations in Southern and East Africa, in particular.

WorldFish Center Presents Lessons Learned for Small Fisheries [viewed]

8 October 2012: In the context of declining fisheries, and with a view to evaluating the success of large and small fisheries programmes in the Philippines, the WorldFish Center has produced a brief on lessons learned on small-scale fisheries from eight regional sites. The brief underscores the need for better clarification of management functions between administrative levels, through scaling up small-scale fisheries management and expanding institutional partnerships.

UNDP Publication Highlights Biodiversity Loss, Recovery Strategies in Europe and CIS [viewed]

CBD Study Examines Climate-related Geoengineering, Impacts on Biodiversity [viewed]

September 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has published a study examining technical and regulatory matters on geoengineering in relation to the CBD. Circulated as CBD Technical Series No. 66, the study finds that there is no satisfactory climate geoengineering approach currently available, and that  international law provides an incomplete basis for the governance of geoengineering.

EU, FAO Announce Call for Proposals on Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade [viewed]

IPBES Issues Guidance on Nominations to Bureau, Expert Platform [viewed]

28 September 2012: The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has issued a guidance note on selecting Officers of the Bureau and members of the Multidisciplinary Expert Platform (MEP), ahead of the forthcoming First Plenary (IPBES 1). According to the note, the process to be followed for the nomination and selection of Bureau members has three stages: proposals from countries, consideration and nominations by regions, and selection by the Plenary.

FAO Brochure Offers Guidance on SFM and SLM Financing Strategy [viewed]

18 September 2012: The Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN (FAO) has published a policy brochure on "Unlocking National Opportunities: New Insights on Financing Sustainable Forest and Land Management." The publication outlines a six-step process for mobilizing financial resources for sustainable forest management (SFM) and sustainable land management (SLM), and draws on case studies from Guatemala, Jordan, Peru and Zambia to illustrate its findings.
