The Second Meeting of the Sixth Replenishment of the Global Environment Facility (GEF-6) is scheduled to take place in September 2013. Representatives from donor countries, non-donor recipient countries, civil society, GEF agencies, the Trustee, the Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP), and the Evaluation Office are set to attend.

UNFF10 Report Calls for Recognition of the Value of Forests [viewed]

Unff1 July 2013: The UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) has released the report of its tenth session held on 4 February 2011, and from 8-19 April 2013. The report includes two resolutions for the attention of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC): the first on progress in the implementation of the non-legally binding agreement on all types of forests; and the second on emerging issues, the means of implementation and the UNFF trust fund.

Event: 46th GEF Council Meeting and GEF Assembly [viewed]

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly will be held back-to-back with the 46th GEF Council meeting in Mexico. A report on the host city, Cancún, was considered at the 45th Council meeting in November 2013. The CSO Consultation, GEF Council and LDCF/SCCF Council Meetings will convene from 25-27 May, with the Council meeting beginning on 25 May and overlapping for half a day, on 27 May, with the CSO Consultation. The Assembly will convene from 28-30 May. All 183 member nations, including South Sudan – the GEF's newest member – will gather for the Assembly. The GEF Council meets twice a year, while the Assembly meets every four years to take major decisions, including endorsement of the next four-year GEF replenishment package.

44th GEF Council Meeting Approves US$369.82 Million Work Program [viewed]

gef4420 June 2013: The 44th Meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council adopted a Work Program amounting to US$369.82 million, comprising 48 projects on biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), as well as multi-focal area projects.

Issues in Managing Europe's Forests Highlighted at Meetings of Stakeholders, Communicators [viewed]

FAO UNECE23 May 2013: Two meetings convened in May 2013 addressed European forests. The first engaged stakeholders in discussions on the legally binding agreement on forests in Europe (LBA), while the second, convened by the Forests Communicators Network under the theme 'Cutting edge in forestry communication,' considered a communications plan in support of the upcoming Madrid Extraordinary Ministerial Conference.

Event: 22nd Session of the FAO Committee on Forestry [viewed]

The Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has approved the dates of the next Committee on Forestry (COFO), set for 23–27 June 2014. The biennial session will be held at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, and will bring together heads of forest services and other senior government officials to identify emerging policy and technical issues, to seek solutions and to advise FAO and others on appropriate action. Participants will also include representatives from other international organizations and non-governmental groups. Participation in COFO is open to all FAO member countries.

Event: Inaugural Meeting of High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development [viewed]

The inaugural meeting of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) will take place on 24 September 2013. This will be the first formal meeting of the HLPF since a decision was taken to establish the forum at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) in June 2012. The HLPF aims to follow up on the implementation of sustainable development, and to build on the strengths, experiences, resources and inclusive participation modalities of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), and to replace the Commission. WIPO IGC Advances Draft on Traditional Knowledge [viewed]

WIPO29 April 2013: Held from 22-26 April 2013, in Geneva, Switzerland, the 24th session of the Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) focused on improving a draft text of an international legal instrument on intellectual property and traditional knowledge.
