IPBES-2 Adopts the Antalya Consensus, Appoints First Executive Secretary [viewed]

ipbes214 December 2013: The second session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-2) concluded with the adoption of the Antalya Consensus, a set of decisions detailing the Platform's work programme, operating procedures and relationship with the UN. The Plenary also announced the appointment of Anne Larigauderie as the first IPBES Executive Secretary.

Barcelona Convention Parties Adopt Declaration on Marine Environment [viewed]

unep-map11 December 2013: Mediterranean and EU Ministers and Heads of State committed to protect coastal and marine species and habitats at the 18th Ordinary Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean and its Protocols (CoP 18). CoP 18, which took place from 3-6 December 2103, in Istanbul, Turkey, resulted in the Istanbul Declaration, which includes 17 decisions.

CMS StC41 Discusses Future and Implementation of Priority Activities [viewed]

CMS3 December 2013: The 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS StC41) discussed the increased competition for funding with other multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) and the need for synergies, policy coherence and greater efficiency. During the Meeting, the Secretariat highlighted progress in the development of an international action plan for the conservation of the argali sheep as well as the Central Asian Initiative to conserve migratory mammals.

Event: CMS COP 11 [viewed]

Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The COP will be preceded by a High Level Ministerial meeting on 3 November. Another Standing Committee meeting will be held 9 November upon closure of the COP.

GEF Council Approves US$259.84 Million Work Program [viewed]

45th-meeting-of-the-GEF-Council7 November 2013: The 45th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council considered, inter alia: the progress report on the pilot accreditation of GEF Project Agencies; the mid-term evaluation of the System for Transparent Allocation of Resources (STAR); the mid-term evaluation of the National Portfolio Formulation Exercise (NPFE); an update on the GEF-6 replenishment; a review of GEF Agencies on their application of environmental and social safeguards and gender mainstreaming; and an update on the development of the GEF 2020 strategy. The GEF Council also approved a Work Program amounting to US$259.84 million.

UNDESA, UNDP Brief Presents Options for Forests and the SDGs [viewed]

Event: Open Ended Intergovernmental Ad Hoc Expert Group of the UNFF on the IAF [viewed]

The Ad Hoc Expert Group (AHEG) was established at the tenth meeting of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF 10) with a mandate to review the performance and effectiveness of the International Arrangement on Forests (IAF) and to develop recommendations on a strategic direction for the IAF for the period beyond 2015. The AHEG will consider stakeholder input and the results of an IAF assessment in order to provide recommendations to the eleventh session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF 11) on the function and institutional arrangements of the IAF for the period beyond 2015.

Event: 15th Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture [viewed]

The 15th Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA 15) is expected to convene in 2015. The Commission provides the only permanent forum for governments to discuss and negotiate matters specifically relevant to biological diversity for food and agriculture. The Commission aims to reach international consensus on policies for the sustainable use and conservation of genetic resources for food and agriculture and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits derived from their use.
