July 2012: The Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) continued negotiations on the latest draft text of an international legal instrument on the protection of traditional cultural expressions. The IGC met from 9-13 July 2012, in Geneva, Switzerland.

The agenda for the First Meeting of the Signatories (MoS1) to the UNEP/CMS Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks includes, inter alia: reports from the first, second and third sharks negotiation meetings; reports from signatories; consideration of a draft conservation plan; and administrative and budgetary matters. As of 18 June 2012, the following countries had signed the MOU: Congo, Costa Rica, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Palau, Philippines, Senegal, Togo, US, Nauru, Tuvalu, Australia, Chile, South Africa, Belgium, Denmark, EU, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Romania, Monaco, and UK.

The Seventh Conference of the Parties (COP 7) to the Nairobi Convention is being convened under the theme "Partnering for a Healthy Western Indian Ocean." It is expected that COP 7 will foster collaboration between international, regional and national organizations as well as secure partnerships between key regional players and the Contracting Parties of the Nairobi Convention in the implementation of the Nairobi Convention Work Programme 2013-2016. COP 7 is preceded by the Science for Policy Workshop (10-11 December) and the Policy Makers and Experts Meeting (12 December) to review decisions to be taken at the COP. The Nairobi Convention area includes: Comoros, France, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, Tanzania and South Africa.

27 July 2012: The 62nd meeting of the Standing Committee (SC 62) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) convened from 23-27 July 2012, in Geneva, Switzerland. The Committee addressed, inter alia: financial matters; CITES' relationship with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP); and species trade and conservation, with discussions focusing on elephants, rhinos, and tigers.

29 June 2012: The Presidents of the Southern Cone Common Market (MERCOSUR) Member States have issued a declaration addressing sustainable development, climate change, global mercury negotiations and mining. The leaders were meeting during a semi-annual summit, held on 29 June 2012, in Mendoza, Argentina. Immediately thereafter, a summit with the Associate States of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru adopted two additional declarations.

The 14th Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA 14) of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will address, among other issues: the review of the implementation of the outcomes of the International Technical Conference on Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture; the State of the World's Forest Genetic Resources Report; the State of the World's Aquatic Genetic Resources Report; key issues on micro-organisms and invertebrates; and relevant international targets and indicators for biodiversity for food and food and agriculture.
