IMO Environment Committee Considers Ballast Water Systems, Ship Recycling Convention [viewed]

IMO10 April 2014: The 66th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) granted Basic Approval to four, and Final Approval to two, ballast water management systems that make use of Active Substances. The Committee also reviewed work under the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009.

WIPO IGC Refines Draft Articles on Traditional Knowledge, Cultural Expressions [viewed]

Wipo4 April 2014: Following two weeks of text-based negotiations, the Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) revised and forwarded to the WIPO General Assembly two sets of draft articles on traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions. These drafts, along with the draft on intellectual property and genetic resources forwarded by the IGC in February 2014, could form the basis of one or more international legal instruments.

Event: Seventh Meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to Study Issues Relating to the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine BBNJ [viewed]

The seventh meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) is the first of three meetings (April 2014, June 2014 and January 2015) to discuss the scope, parameters and feasibility of a possible new international instrument on marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The outcome of these meetings is expected to contribute to a decision to be taken at the sixty-nineth session of the UN General Assembly on the development of a new international instrument under UNCLOS.

Event: Fourth Meeting of the Sixth Replenishment of the GEF [viewed]

Event: Open-Ended Meeting of the CPR to UNEA [viewed]

The Open-Ended Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) to the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) will consider policy matters and prepare draft decisions for the consideration of the UNEA when it meets in June 2014. The meeting will discuss, inter alia: new mechanisms to promote transparency and civil society engagement; critical gaps and recommendations on the science-policy interface;and recommendations to the Secretary-General on enhancing UNEP's role in key UN coordination bodies. The CPR will also discuss implementation of past UNEP Governing Council decisions, including a policy on access to information; international water quality guidelines for ecosystems; and outcomes of a consultative process on enhancing coordination within the chemicals and wastes cluster. The CPR is the subsidiary inter-session body of UNEP's governing body.

ICNP 3 Adopts Recommendations in Preparation for COP/MOP 1, Makes Progress on Compliance [viewed]

CBD3 March 2014: Meeting from 24-28 February 2014, in Pyeongchang, the Republic of Korea, the third Meeting of the Open-ended Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ICNP 3) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted a series of recommendations in preparation for the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties (COP/MOP 1) to the Protocol.

UN Launches International Year of SIDS [viewed]

iy24 February 2014: At the global launch of the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), to be celebrated throughout 2014, Ronald Jumeau, Ambassador of Climate Change and SIDS, Seychelles, who served as Master of Ceremonies, noted that the occasion marks the first time the UN has dedicated an International Year to a particular category of countries.
