IUCN SSC Proceedings Highlight Importance of CBNRM [viewed]

16 December 2011: The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission (SSC) released the proceedings of the international symposium on community-based natural resource management (CBNRM), and its relevance to the conservation and sustainable use of CITES-listed species in exporting countries. Participants discussed markhor conservation efforts, incentives for local sustainable management of migratory species, and biological impacts of sustainable use.

CCAD Receives Funding to Implement Conservation and Climate Projects [viewed]

14 December 2011: Germany's Ambassador Christian Stocks and El Salvador's Environment Minister Herman Rosa Chavez, on behalf of the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD), have signed an agreement and exchanged three letters of cooperation whereby Germany will provide €17 million to support the implementation of four environmental, biodiversity and climate projects in Central America.

November 2011: The Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP), which is administered by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and advises the Global Environment Facility (GEF), has released a report that stresses the need for the GEF to develop a faster response to the growing problem of dead zones in the world's coastal waters.

EU Fisheries Ministers Agree to Regulations for Black Sea Stocks [viewed]

6 December 2011: EU Ministers for Fisheries reached an agreement to regulate fishing opportunities in the Black Sea to promote sustainable stock management. They also were briefed by the European Commission on a proposal targeting countries that allow non-sustainable fishing. They met in Brussels, Belgium, from 15-16 December 2011.

UNESCO-IOC to Cooperate in Yeosu Project on Oceans and Coasts [viewed]

13 December 2011: As part of the Yeosu project, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO-IOC) signed a cooperation agreement with the organizing committee for the Yeosu Expo 2012 and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). The Yeosu Project aims to support developing countries in achieving sustainable development of the oceans and coasts.

UNEP Launches iPhone App on Ecosystems and Climate Change [viewed]
