14 December 2011: Germany's Ambassador Christian Stocks and El Salvador's Environment Minister Herman Rosa Chavez, on behalf of the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD), have signed an agreement and exchanged three letters of cooperation whereby Germany will provide €17 million to support the implementation of four environmental, biodiversity and climate projects in Central America.
November 2011: The Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP), which is administered by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and advises the Global Environment Facility (GEF), has released a report that stresses the need for the GEF to develop a faster response to the growing problem of dead zones in the world's coastal waters.
6 December 2011: EU Ministers for Fisheries reached an agreement to regulate fishing opportunities in the Black Sea to promote sustainable stock management. They also were briefed by the European Commission on a proposal targeting countries that allow non-sustainable fishing. They met in Brussels, Belgium, from 15-16 December 2011.
14 December 2011: The Fifth Pan-American meeting of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) focused on issues to be addressed by the 11th Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Ramsar Convention, to be held in Bucharest, Romania, from 6-13 July 2012.
12 December 2011: The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) Secretariat signed a new partnership agreement with Humane Society International (HSI) Australia to pursue shared conservation goals.
13 December 2011: As part of the Yeosu project, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO-IOC) signed a cooperation agreement with the organizing committee for the Yeosu Expo 2012 and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). The Yeosu Project aims to support developing countries in achieving sustainable development of the oceans and coasts.
12 December 2011: The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO-IOC) has signed an Aide Memoire with the Agulhas and Somali Current Large Marine Ecosystem (LME) project of the UN Development Programme (UNDP)/Global Environment Facility (GEF).
13 December 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched an iPhone application intended to draw attention to the critical role played by ecosystems in tackling climate change. The Blue and REDD Carbon iPhone application was launched at the Eye on Earth Summit, which is convening in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
9 December 2011: In preparation for the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 11), the CBD Secretariat has circulated the provisional agenda and annotated agenda for the meeting, as approved by the COP Bureau.
6 December 2011: An international conference on “The Future of Wetlands” brought together experts from several European countries, the Europarc Federation and the Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) to: reflect on the current state of wetlands and the failure to reach the 2010 biodiversity target; explore why wetlands are relevant; identify more efficient and sustainable solutions; and increase political commitment for the future.
