March 2011: The Fifth Session of the South West Indian Fisheries Commission (SWIOF) was organized upon invitation of the Government of Maldives, from 13-16 March 2011, in Male, Maldives. The session included delegates from the region as well as observers from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the World Bank.
6 April 2011: The Steering Committee of the Global Islands Partnership (GLISPA) met from 22-23 February 2011, in Washington, DC, and has issued the report of its meeting.
March 2011: The World Bank has released a report titled "Mitigating Climate Change through Restoration and Management of Coastal Wetlands and Near-shore Marine Ecosystems," which finds that drainage and degradation of coastal wetlands emit significant amounts of carbon dioxide directly into the atmosphere and lead to decreased carbon sequestration.
The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism is organizing this event, which is aimed at bring together stakeholders in the Caribbean region's fisheries sector to review and endorse the Revised Agreement on the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Common Fisheries Policy. The workshop is expected to be the final technical conference to negotiate the framework agreement establishing the Common Fisheries Policy.
The Congress theme will be Nature+, a slogan that captures the fundamental importance of nature and its inherent link to every aspect of people's lives. The Congress will explore many of the most pressing environmental and development challenges from this perspective and how strong and resilient nature is intricately linked to solving these issues, including Nature+climate, nature+livelihoods, nature+energy and nature+economics.
The theme for World Oceans Day 2011 is "Our oceans: greening our future." The UN General Assembly officially designated 8 June as annual World Oceans Day in Resolution 63/111 to raise global awareness of the current challenges faced by the international community in connection with the oceans.
4 April 2011: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) met on 4 April 2011 to adopt a draft resolution on oceans and the law of the sea.
The second meeting of the Ad Hoc Working Group of the Whole on the Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socio-economic Aspects, will convene from 27-28 June 2011.
The 21st meeting of States Parties to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea will take place from 13-17 June 2011.
April 2011: The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has released the April edition of "Focus," the organization's newsletter, highlighting stories of conservation's "unsung heroes."
