Event: Ramsar Pre COP 11 African Regional Preparatory Meeting [viewed]

This meeting will address major themes that influence the way that wetland ecosystems will need to be managed during the coming years; its will also include an African Dialogue on wetlands governance and valuation of wetlands services, which will aim to promote good governance and enhance wetlands services in Africa through a regional consultation. Event: Lucerne World Mountain Conference [viewed]

Participants at this conference will discuss regional and global experiences in mountain development since Rio 1992. The results of the Conference will produce insights that will feed into initiatives and events such as the UN Secretary General's High-level Panel on Global Sustainability (GSP), the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20), and the CSD biennal cycle 20/21 in 2013 and 2014, where mountains will be one of the five priority themes, as well as into other global sustainable development processes. Among the themes debated will be the role, in mountains, of green economy and institutional frameworks for sustainable developement and poverty alleviation.

Ramsar Article Highlights Importance of Wetlands to Climate Change Adaptation [viewed]

31 August 2011: In a paper entitled "The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands: 40 Years of Action," Ramsar Secretary General Anada Tièga reflects on progress Ramsar has made as well as areas where attention is still needed. Published for Les Ateliers de la Terre, the article offers an overview of the importance of wetland conservation, climate change and wetlands, interdependencies, impacts of climate change, links between climate change, wetlands and short- and medium-term consequences on agriculture, and the importance of cooperation and partnerships.

CIFOR Blog Questions Effectiveness of Protected Areas [viewed]

24 August 2011: POLEX, a publication on forest policy of the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), highlights the results of a recent study on the effectiveness of protected areas in conserving biodiversity, compared to community-managed forests. Porter-Bolland et al., authors of the study published in Forest Ecology and Management, found that community-managed forests performed better than protected areas in having lower annual deforestation rates and experienced less variation in rates of forest cover loss.
