14 December 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has reported on the outcomes of a workshop on priority adaptation measures to climate change for fisheries and aquaculture in Fiji, including the identification of inshore fish aggregating devices (FADs) as a key “win-win” adaptation to meet increased demand for fish in areas with degraded coral reefs.
12 December 2012: The IX Meeting of High Andean Wetlands (HAW) Regional Initiative and Strategy agreed to develop a regional monitoring network, and discussed the implementation, governance, financial challenges and future of the Initiative.
December 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has released the results of a two-week surveillance operation, named “Kurukuru 2012,” aimed at detecting illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities in the Pacific.
26 November 2012: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) has approved the draft resolution on “Strengthening the UN crime prevention and criminal justice programme, in particular its technical cooperation capacity” (A/C.3/67/L.15/Rev.1).
14 December 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) have launched a joint publication titled “Catalysing Ocean Finance,” on 14 December 2012, in Washington, DC, US. The two-volume publication demonstrates how public investment can reverse declines in global ocean health, scale up ocean planning and policy tools, leverage financial flows and transform ocean markets towards sustainability.
14 December 2012: The "Second Environmental Performance Review (EPR) of Tajikistan" conducted by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) highlights that waste management and clean water and sanitation remain challenges for this country. UNECE EPRs cover ten elements including: environmental policymaking, planning and implementation; financing of environmental policies; waste and water management; biodiversity conservation; and integration of environmental issues into energy and health policies.
11 December 2012: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a resolution on sustainable fisheries that recognizes the contribution of fisheries to sustainable development (document A/67/L.22). The resolution also reflects the call made at Rio+20 for the adoption, by 2014, of strategies to assist developing countries, particularly the least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing States (SIDS), in developing their national capacity to conserve, sustainably manage and realize the benefits of sustainable fisheries.
13 December 2012: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention) has reported on the meeting of the management body of the Ramsar regional initiative for Coastal Wetlands of the Black and Azov Seas (BlackSeaWet). The meeting focused on a limited number of priority problems of wetland conservation, management and restoration to be addressed in 2013.
29 November 2012: The 21st Conference of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) Regional Commission for the Americas considered, among other issues, the role that national veterinary services play in managing disease outbreaks and other risks to animal welfare and animal health in situations of exceptional climatic events or disasters of other origins.
This workshop is one of a series of regional sub-regional capacity-building workshops organized with a view to support countries in making use of the findings of the study on The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB), in integrating the values of biodiversity into relevant national and local policies, programmes and planning processes, and in promoting the exchange among practitioners on practical experiences on incentive measures.
