23 March 2013: Ministers of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) representing ministries of foreign affairs, defense and security issues, regional integration and wildlife protection convened an emergency meeting in Yaoundé, Cameroon and adopted an emergency anti-poaching plan (PEXULAB) to protect elephants in ECCAS countries.
This event, which will convene under the theme 'Losing Ground?' is organized by the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam, Germany. It will bring together practitioners, policy makers, scientists and representatives from civil society organizations to share knowledge and experience on soil and land related issues and to make plans to advance the global agenda for sustainable development. A call for proposals will be posted soon.
2 April 2013: The Chair of the High Level Committee on Programmes (HLCP), UN System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB), Achim Steiner, on behalf of the UN Secretary-General, has invited UN Member States and Specialized Agencies to submit names for possible nomination to the Ocean Compact Advisory Group (OCAG), and specified selection criteria. The call is open until 15 April 2013.
March 2013: The UN Development Programme (UNDP), with funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), has collaborated with the Municipality of Resen in Macedonia to restore the Prespa lake ecosystem.
March 2013: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a series of videos on forests in Algeria, Tanzania and the Mediterranean region in celebration of the first International Day of Forests, held 21 March 2013.
21 March 2013: The Western Hemisphere Migratory Species Initiative (WHMSI) has approved funding for six projects under its Small Grant Fund. The decision, taken during the WHMSI Steering Committee meeting on 28-29 January 2013, follows a call for proposals issued during the fall of 2012.
14 March 2013: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has completed a three-day Expanded Capacity Workshop (ECW) for the West African Sahel, bringing together focal points from the GEF, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).
15 March 2013: The sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP 16) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) adopted 55 new listing proposals, saw the first global meeting of wildlife enforcement networks and adopted measures to address wildlife crime.
15 March 2013: The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the International Council for Science (ICSU) have set up a survey to inform the development of the first draft of a stakeholder engagement strategy and to collect views on stakeholder engagement in the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
15 March 2013: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has launched a Biodiversity and Ecosystems Services Program (BSE) to help Latin America and the Caribbean leverage its natural capital to protect the environment while promoting sustainable development.
