21 December 2012: The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution on “Promotion of ecotourism for poverty eradication and environment protection." By the text (A/67/441), adopted on 21 December 2012, the Assembly calls for optimizing ecotourism's benefits particularly in African countries, the least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing States (SIDS).
21 December 2012: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – International Hydrological Programme (UNESCO-IHP) has released a book linked to its Water and Cultural Diversity project, titled “Water, Cultural Diversity and Global Environmental Change: Emerging Trends, Sustainable Futures?”
20 December 2012: The Global Mechanism of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), in collaboration with the OSLO (Offering Sustainable Land-use Options) Consortium, the Government of Rwanda and the Land Policy Initiative, recently organized a sub-regional Knowledge Exchange and Capacity Building Workshop for Eastern Africa on the Economic Valuation of Land and Ecosystem Services.
20 December 2012: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention) has reported on a workshop to trial a newly-developed Arabic language wetland management planning training programme.
Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this capacity-building workshop for Western and Central Africa will focus on the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI) and the achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets 9 on invasive alien species and 19 on improving biodiversity-related knowledge.
The Third International Conference for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is scheduled to convene from 1-4 September 2014, in Samoa. This conference will include a high-level segment to build upon the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation (MSI), and will identify new challenges for the sustainable development of SIDS. According to UN General Assembly resolution A/67/L.66, "The General Assembly, recalling its resolution 67/207 of 21 December 2012, in which it welcomed the offer of the Government of the Independent State of Samoa to host the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States in 2014, decides that the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States shall be held from 1 to 4 September 2014 in Apia, to be preceded by activities related to the Conference from 28 to 30 August 2014, also in Apia".
12 December 2012: The Range States of Central Asia have unanimously agreed to extend the Agreement on African Eurasia Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) geographical area to encompass the entire Central Asian Flyway (CAF) region and incorporate the CAF Waterbird Action Plan under the Agreement. The meeting on the way forward for the CAF legal framework took place in in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), on 12 December 2012.
This workshop is one of a series of regional sub-regional capacity-building workshops organized with a view to support countries in making use of the findings of the study on The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB), in integrating the values of biodiversity into relevant national and local policies, programmes and planning processes, and in promoting the exchange among practitioners on practical experiences on incentive measures.
11 December 2012: The First Meeting of Signatories (MoS1) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) Memorandum of Understanding concerning the Conservation of Migratory Birds of Prey in Africa and Eurasia (Raptors MoU) took place from 9-11 December 2012, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It was attended by more than 90 participants, including representatives from 22 Signatories and the EU.
10 December 2012: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a special edition of Infosylva on the occasion of the conclusion of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The newsletter focuses on the outcomes of Forest Day 6, held on 2 November 2012, on the margins of COP 18.
