UNEP/GRID-Arendal Newsletter Highlights West African Training Programme on Continental Shelf [viewed]

November 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP)/GRID-Arendal Marine Programme released the November 2011 edition of its newsletter. Marine Newsletter #23 features an update on the UNEP Shelf Programme, which aims to assist West African countries in the establishment of the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles.

Event: TEEB Capacity-building Workshop for North Africa and the Middle East [viewed]

This workshop is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) through its Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA), and the UN Economic and Social Commission for West Asia (ESCWA), in close coordination with the UNEP TEEB Office, the League of Arab States, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and in cooperation with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). The workshop seeks to: provide decision-makers in the region with economic arguments for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity; promote synergies and enhanced cooperation among relevant policy areas and sectors by mainstreaming biodiversity and ecosystem services; and support the revision and review or update of national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) in light of the new Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020.

African Elephant Fund Approves First Projects [viewed]

21 December 2011: The first official session of the Steering Committee of the African Elephant Action Plan and the African Elephant Fund, created under the auspices of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), held a three-day meeting to allocate funds to six elephant conservation projects. The Committee includes representatives of the range states and donor countries.

Additional Parties Join CMS Sharks and Raptors MOUs [viewed]

22 December 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) has announced that several new parties have joined the Memoranda of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks (Sharks MoU) and on the Conservation of Migratory Birds of Prey in Africa and Eurasia (Raptors MoU).

UNESCO-IOC to Cooperate in Yeosu Project on Oceans and Coasts [viewed]

13 December 2011: As part of the Yeosu project, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO-IOC) signed a cooperation agreement with the organizing committee for the Yeosu Expo 2012 and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). The Yeosu Project aims to support developing countries in achieving sustainable development of the oceans and coasts.

PROFOR Launches Updated Book on Managing Southern African Woodlands [viewed]

1 December 2011: The World Bank's Programme on Forests (PROFOR) has launched an updated version of its study on the miombo woodlands of southern Africa. The original study explored policies, incentives and options for the rural poor. The updated study revisits this situation in the context of a changing climate, growing food insecurity and increasing demand for woodfuel and charcoal.
