5 February 2013: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) are collaborating to train South Sudanese wildlife authorities on all aspects of professional park management. The programme aims to preserve wildlife and support rural livelihoods through three components: improving national park conservation; building government capacity; and sustainably financing conservation efforts.
22 January 2013: A new Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) notification highlights that the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)/Species Survival Commission African and Asian Rhino Specialist Groups and TRAFFIC Final Report referred to in CITES Resolution Conf. 9.14 (Rev. CoP15) was received by the Secretariat in late December 2012 and is now available.
January 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP)/GRID-Arendal Marine Programme has released the January issue of its newsletter (Marine Newsletter #1), featuring articles on: the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded demonstration project on the incorporation of carbon and other ecosystem services values into financial markets; the release of the State of the Mediterranean Marine and Coastal Environment Report; and the launch of the World Ocean Assessment website.
January 2013: Edited by Isabel López Noriega, Michael Halewood and Isabel Lapeña, Bioversity International has published a volume that includes four case studies highlighting the incentives, disincentives, opportunities and constraints for Kenya, Morocco, Peru and the Philippines in the implementation of the Multilateral System (MLS) of access and benefit-sharing (ABS) established under the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR), as well as the measures that could be adopted at the national level to advance the Treaty's implementation.
29 January 2013: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention) has reported that the Government of Tunisia recently designated two Important Bird Areas (IBAs) as new Wetlands of International Importance.
25 January 2013: The Republic of Congo and the Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC) convened the third General Assembly of the Network of Indigenous and Local Communities for the Sustainable Management of Forest Ecosystems in Central Africa (REPALEAC).
24 January 2013: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Fisheries and Aquaculture Department has published an audit of inland capture fishery statistics in Africa.
January 2013: The December-January issue of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) Bulletin highlights recent progress, including that four of the five tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (tRFMOS) have adopted seabird conservation measures that incorporate the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP)'s best practice advice for pelagic long line fisheries.
The Steering Committee on the Global Environmental Facility, United Nations Environment Programme, World Resources Institute, and Rainforest Alliance (GEF-UNEP-WRI-RA) project on "A Regional Focus on Sustainable Timber Management in the Congo Basin" will meet in Doala, Cameroon from 28-31 January 2013. The project is taking place with the support of The Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), World Resources Institute (WRI), Rainforest Alliance, alongside officials from government, national NGOs, the private sector and international development organizations across the Congo Basin.
