IWC Discusses Aboriginal Subsistence Whaling, Environmental and Health Matters [viewed]

6 July 2012: The 64th Annual Meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and the associated meetings of its Scientific Committee and other sub-groups took place in Panama City, Panama, from 11 June - 6 July 2012. The Commission addressed administrative and substantive matters, including aboriginal subsistence whaling, animal welfare, and climate change and cetaceans.

CROP Receives New Support for Regional Projects [viewed]

29 June 2012: The Council of the Regional Organisations of the Pacific (CROP) has received a donation of US$500,000 from the Taiwan/ROC Regional Development Assistance Fund for 2011/2012, for the support and implementation of CROP agencies' regional projects. These projects address education and capacity building, regional aviation safety, fisheries, marine and water management, and the Smaller Island States (SIS) programmes.

Event: Asian Regional Workshop on Reflecting the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation in NBSAPs [viewed]

Event: Regional Workshop for Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regions on Updating NBSAPs [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this workshop will assist countries from Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia in revising and updating their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) in line with the framework of the CBD Strategic Plan. The workshop will also address: the use of indicators to monitor biodiversity at national and regional levels for monitoring progress towards the global Aichi Biodiversity Targets; and the use of ecosystem-based approaches for adaptation that include conservation and restoration of ecosystems, as part of an overall adaptation strategy to reduce direct pressures on and promote sustainable use of biodiversity.

CTI Paper Outlines Strategic Links With Rio+20 Themes [viewed]

4 July 2012: The Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) has produced a white paper arguing that strategies to achieve CTI objectives also have been effective in achieving commitments from the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED, or Rio Earth Summit), and now offer an opportunity to deliver on new emerging priorities from the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

Event: Regional Workshop (Middle East and North Africa) on Updating NBSAPs [viewed]

Organized by Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD ), in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme - Regional Office of West Asia (UNEP-ROWA), the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman, the League of Arab States, and the Biodiversity Indicators Partnership, the Regional Workshop for the Middle East and North Africa on Updating National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) will assist countries from the Middle East and North Africa in revising and updating their NBSAPs in line with the framework of the CBD Strategic Plan. The workshop will focus on: target setting, stakeholder engagement and the development of country-specific plans for mobilizing financial resources for the implementation of NBSAPs; and the use of biodiversity indicators to monitor biodiversity at national and regional levels in the context of monitoring progress towards the global Aichi Biodiversity Targets.

UNESCO Committee Inscribes Five Natural World Heritage Sites [viewed]

2 July 2012: During its 36th session, the World Heritage Committee of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed five natural World Heritage Sites: Lakes of Ounianga (Chad); Sangha Trinational (Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo); Chengjiang Fossil Site (China); Western Ghats (India); and Lena Pillars Nature Park (Russian Federation). In addition, Rock Islands Southern Lagoon (Palau) was inscribed as a mixed natural and cultural site.

Voluntary Commitments Total 715 After Rio+20 [viewed]

RIO+2028 June 2012: The UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) Secretariat has reported receiving 715 voluntary commitments, including commitments that will mobilize more than US$500 billion in action towards sustainable development. These include 52 government commitments, 82 UN/IGO commitments and 581 Major Group and civil society commitments.
