April 2012: The Poverty and Conservation Learning Group (PCLG) has published the latest issues of its biodiversity and society bulletin, called “Biosoc,” and its monthly newsletter. The PCLG is a multi-stakeholder forum, coordinated by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), for promoting dialogue and fostering learning on the links between biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction.
Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the PoWPA Friends Consortium and hosted by the Ministry of Environment, Mining and Spatial Planning of Serbia, this workshop aims to build capacity to: create national action plans for implementation of the programme of work on protected areas (PoWPA); access funding based on these action plans; and strengthen implementation of the PoWPA on the themes of governance, climate change, sustainable financing, and valuation of the costs and benefits of protected areas.
9 May 2012: John Scanlon, Secretary-General of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), awarded a Certificate of Commendation to the National Inter-Agency CITES Enforcement Collaboration Group (NICECG) of China, coordinated by the CITES Management Authority of China. The award comes in recognition of two nationwide wildlife law enforcement operations carried out earlier this year.
4 May 2012: The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) held meetings of the Pilot Program on Climate Resilience (PPCR) Sub-Committee, the Scaling Up Renewable Energy Program (SREP) Sub-Committee, the Strategic Climate Fund (SCF) Trust Fund Committee, the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) Trust Fund Committee, and the Forest Investment Program (FIP) sub-Committee, and approved new projects on climate resilience, renewable energy and forests.
1 May 2012: The World Bank has approved a US$18 million credit and US$4.4 million Global Environment Facility (GEF) grant to provide funding for a programme in Moldova aimed at supporting the competitiveness of the agro-food sector.
30 April 2012: The World Bank and the Government of Kazakhstan have reported on success in cleaning up contaminated mercury sites through an initiative to reduce mercury contamination in industrial sites and the Nura's riverbanks and flood plains.
2 May 2012: The April 2012 issue of the International Union for Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission (IUCN SSC) e-bulletin highlights: a call for proposals from the "SOS-Save Our Species" coalition; a workshop on the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES); conservation news on vultures; and Specialist Group news.
April 2012: The World Bank published a brief titled "Helping to Better Manage the World's Oceans," which presents the sectoral results for sustainable ocean ecosystem management and the Bank's role in the creation of the Global Partnership for Oceans.
28 April 2012: A new project has been launched to address the narrowing variety of foods in people's diets, titled the “Biodiversity for Food and Nutrition Project.” The project is coordinated by Bioversity International, under the leadership of Brazil, Kenya, Sri Lanka and Turkey.
