9 February 2012: The winners of the Universal Postal Union's (UPU) International letter-writing competition for 2011 were presented with their awards during the closing ceremony of the International Year of Forests 2011, held at UN Headquarters in New York, US.
March 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has published a booklet highlighting its operations related to the management of transboundary freshwater basins and aquifers, titled “Contributing to Global Security: GEF Action on Water, Environment and Sustainable Livelihoods.”

5 March 2012: During an official visit in Beijing, China, David Sheppard, Director-General of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), met with China Development Gateway, the official online source of information and development tools for the Chinese Government. Sheppard provided an overview of the work of SPREP and discussed opportunities for future joint cooperation with China.
The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) is an intergovernmental organization established under the Constitution of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). It is mandated to manage tuna and tuna-like species in the Indian Ocean and adjacent seas. At its ninth meeting, the Compliance Committee will: perform an overview of the implementation of the IOTC conservation measures; review national reports on the progress of implementation of management measures; review country-based compliance reports; and review issues related to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
2 March 2012: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a technical paper featuring case studies from Brazil, India, Palau and Senegal. The paper is intended to ground the FAO Technical Guidelines on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Fisheries in practical experience and to inform the use of MPAs globally.
28 February 2012: The February issue of the UN-REDD Programme's monthly Newsletter reviews various international and country-specific activities related to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and carbon stock enhancement in developing countries (REDD+).
28 February 2012: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has released the February issue of its newsletter, which summarizes recent CIFOR publications and blog postings on biodiversity, sustainable development and climate change in the context CIFOR's activities.
27 February 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Global Environmental Alert Service (GEAS) has released the February edition of its bulletin, which focuses on Lake Urmia, a hypersaline lake in Iran. The bulletin was produced under the theme of climate change, resource efficiency, ecosystem management, and environmental governance, and focuses on the drying of Lake Urmia and its environmental consequences.
