11 August 2011: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has published a report of the UN Secretary-General that was prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) in response to UNGA resolution 64/205 requesting the Secretary-General to report to it at its 66th session on the status of sustainable development in mountain regions.
1 August 2011: Highlighting that the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) stands apart as the only environmental convention "at the heart of human well-being," Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of Environment and Forests of India, host of the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11), identified five key issues for COP 11's High-level Segment.

August 2011: The August issue of the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) publication "Conservation Made Clear" highlights Asia's unique biodiversity, noting that China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines are some of the world's most mega-diverse countries, and that 10 of 34 international biodiversity hotspots are located in Asia.
This workshop will be convened by the CBD Secretariat with financial support from the Government of Japan. Participants will seek to facilitate the description of ecologically or biologically significant marine areas through application of scientific criteria in annex I of COP Decision IX/20 as well as other relevant compatible and complementary nationally and intergovernmentally agreed scientific criteria, as well as the scientific guidance on the identification of marine areas beyond national jurisdiction, which meet the scientific criteria in annex I to Decision IX/20.
This country-led initiative (CLI) in support of the UN Forum on Forests is expected to convene in January 2012.
July 2011: This paper looks at the progress made in the implementation of the CBD and 2010 targets in the eight countries of the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, Myanmar and Pakistan. The paper was commissioned by ICIMOD, an inter-governmental institution mandated for the region, as one of its activities in support of the CBD and the International Year of Biodiversity 2010.
1 August 2011: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has presented the results of a project to rehabilitate degraded drylands in Kazakhstan, which sought to improve livelihoods and provide sources of income for communities.
