19 April 2013: The fourteenth session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA 14) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) was held from 15-19 April 2013, at FAO headquarters, in Rome, Italy, and marked the Commission's 30th anniversary.
18 April 2013: Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) members participated in two informal forest dialogues with China, both of which were held in Douala, Cameroon. Since 2007-2008, CBFP members have engaged in informal dialogues with Chinese actors on sustainable forest management (SFM) and issues such as certification, timber traceability and the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Action Plan of the European Union. The two recent dialogues aimed to improve forest governance, reduce poverty and more sustainably manage forest resources.
16 April 2013: The European Union (EU) Parliament voted to adopt a ban on discarding unwanted fish caught in the Skagerrak, a strait connecting the Baltic and the North Seas. The ban, which will be implemented between 2014 and 2016, requires all fishing vessels to land all caught fish, regardless of fish size or species.
15 April 2013: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) has reported that the Government of Belarus has designated four Important Bird Areas as new Wetlands of International Importance, totaling an area of over 100,000 hectares.
12 April 2013: The 3rd Meeting of Signatories to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Conservation and Management of the Middle-European Population of the Great Bustard (Otis tarda), held in Szarvas, Hungary, adopted a new Action Plan for the period 2012-2016.
16 April 2013: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that it has signed a bilateral agreement with the Government of the Russian Federation, covering priority environmental areas including: biodiversity conservation; the environmental aspects of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics; and environmental challenges facing the Arctic.
12 April 2013: In a keynote address by Tarja Halonen, former President of Finland and Chair of the High-level Panel on Global Sustainability, participants at the third Special Session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST S-3) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference were reminded that sustainable land management (SLM) can be one of the most important tools for poverty eradication, and they were challenged to send a strong message that a land degradation neutral world is possible, with concrete targets and a monitoring system to follow progress.
10 April 2013: The tenth session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF10) convened a multi-stakeholder dialogue that examined sustainable forest management (SFM), financing, the implementation of the non-legally binding instrument on all types of forests, and the achievement of the four global objectives on forests.
10 April 2013: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) has reported that the Government of Montenegro has designated Tivat Saline, a Special Flora and Fauna Reserve located in the coastal strip of Tivat Bay, as its second Wetland of International Importance.
4 April 2013: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) has reported that the Government of Iceland has designated three new Wetlands of International Importance, bringing the total number of sites for this country to six.
