11 March 2013: The first Eye on Earth User Conference, organized by the European Environment Agency (EEA) in association with the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU, convened in Dublin, Ireland, from 4-6 March 2013. The Conference explored ideas for sharing social, environmental and economic information across diverse knowledge communities to advance sustainable development.
7 March 2013: The first global meeting of wildlife enforcement networks (WENs) met on the sidelines of the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES CoP 16) to strengthen regional enforcement capacity, coordination and response to wildlife crime.
6 March 2013: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced that the La Palma Biosphere Reserve, in the Canary Islands, Spain, has launched its 2013-2022 Action Plan. The Plan's slogan is “All Voices, All Hands,” and reflects its emphasis on the active participation of citizens.
28 February 2013: Albania, Botswana and the Federated States of Micronesia have ratified the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing (ABS), bringing the number of ratifications to 15.
22 February 2013: BirdLife and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) co-hosted an event in the European Parliament in Brussels on 21 February 2013 on the threat posed by invasive alien species (IAS). The event was hosted by Member of the European Parliament Poc, Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats.
21 February 2013: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released two reports on invasive species. The first, titled "The impacts of invasive alien species in Europe," discusses the effects and spread of some species. The second, titled "Invasive alien species indicators in Europe," looks at the methodology for collecting the data.
As part of the 11 Global Thematic Consultations on the Post-2015 Development Agenda, this High-Level Meeting will bring together NGOs, the sponsoring governments, and participants from the UN, among others, to discuss and define recommendations on environmental sustainability in a future framework. This consultation is being co-led by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP), with support from the Governments of France and Costa Rica.
This training course is being organized by the UN World Tourism Organization (WTO) with the support of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. It is being held at the Wadden Sea Biosphere Reserve of Schleswig – Holstein, Germany, and will have an emphasis on coastal tourism. The course is aimed at national and local authorities, the private tourism sector and NGOs involved in biodiversity and tourism. Training modules will provide a thorough understanding of the CBD “Guidelines on Biodiversity and Tourism Development” among other topics.
8 February 2013: Arctic Environment Ministers met in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, from 5-6 February 2013, to address the rapid environmental changes in the Arctic. They discussed climate change and ocean acidification, contamination in the Arctic, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem based management.
7 February 2013: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that the Norwegian Ministry of Environment has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UNEP committing to continued cooperation and support to GRID-Arendal for the next 10 years.
