12 December 2012: The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE), the executor of the Central American Markets for Biodiversity (CAMBio) project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), recognized six Honduran financial institutions for providing credit to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMMEs) contributing to biodiversity conservation.
15 November 2012: The World Ocean Assessment (WOA) Workshop for the Wider Caribbean met to discuss the state of assessments of the marine environment in the Wider Caribbean, and provide regional input to the First Global Integrated Marine Assessment. The Assessment is slated for publication in December 2014.
16 December 2012: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a forestry paper reporting on global forest and land use change over the period 1990 to 2005.
12 December 2012: The IX Meeting of High Andean Wetlands (HAW) Regional Initiative and Strategy agreed to develop a regional monitoring network, and discussed the implementation, governance, financial challenges and future of the Initiative.
14 December 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) have launched a joint publication titled “Catalysing Ocean Finance,” on 14 December 2012, in Washington, DC, US. The two-volume publication demonstrates how public investment can reverse declines in global ocean health, scale up ocean planning and policy tools, leverage financial flows and transform ocean markets towards sustainability.
The Third International Conference for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is scheduled to convene from 1-4 September 2014, in Samoa. This conference will include a high-level segment to build upon the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation (MSI), and will identify new challenges for the sustainable development of SIDS. According to UN General Assembly resolution A/67/L.66, "The General Assembly, recalling its resolution 67/207 of 21 December 2012, in which it welcomed the offer of the Government of the Independent State of Samoa to host the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States in 2014, decides that the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States shall be held from 1 to 4 September 2014 in Apia, to be preceded by activities related to the Conference from 28 to 30 August 2014, also in Apia".
10 December 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) has announced funding for a project on the Bahamas' second largest island, Abaco, to conserve the lobster population by training fishermen in sustainable fishing practices.
29 November 2012: The 21st Conference of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) Regional Commission for the Americas considered, among other issues, the role that national veterinary services play in managing disease outbreaks and other risks to animal welfare and animal health in situations of exceptional climatic events or disasters of other origins.
10 December 2012: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a special edition of Infosylva on the occasion of the conclusion of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The newsletter focuses on the outcomes of Forest Day 6, held on 2 November 2012, on the margins of COP 18.
10 December 2012: The latest issue of the Global Island Partnership's (GLISPA) "Event Spotlight" features two events that took place on 16 October 2012 in Hyderabad, India, on the sidelines of the 11th meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The events are: “Island Bright Spots: Exchanging Innovations and Successes;” and "Island Life: Celebrating Leadership and Commitment to Action."
