Ramsar, CBD Release Technical Paper on Environmental Water Requirements for Estuaries [viewed]

8 January 2013: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention) and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) have jointly published a report, titled "Determination and Implementation of Environmental Water Requirements for Estuaries." The report stresses the importance of maintaining the ecological character of estuaries for both integrated river basin management and integrated coastal zone management.

Event: Protected Area Management Course [viewed]

This course is taught in Spanish and is designed for participants from Spanish and Portuguese speaking nations in Latin America, Africa and Europe that are directly involved in planning and management of protected areas, buffer zones and conservation corridors. The course is coordinated by CSU in collaboration with the Office of International Programs of the United States Forest Service and with cooperation of other US federal agencies, including the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service, and Bureau of Reclamation, as well as non-governmental organizations and state and municipal governments. The course will take place from 3 July-3 August 2013, with applications due on 31 January 2013.

NOAA, Arctic Council Release 2012 Arctic Report Card [viewed]

7 December 2012: The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with the support of two working groups of the Arctic Council, has released the 2012 update to the Arctic Report Card. The Report Card, which has been published since 2006 tracks environmental changes in the region, including with regard to the atmosphere, sea ice and ocean, marine ecosystems, terrestrial ecosystems and the terrestrial cryosphere.

UNEP Releases Report on Thawing Permafrost, Warns of Increased GHG Emissions and Threats to Ecosystems [viewed]

UNEP27 November 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a report, titled “Policy Implications of Warming Permafrost,” which aims to highlight the potential hazards of carbon dioxide and methane emissions from warming permafrost. The report also underscores the impacts of decreasing permafrost to ecosystems, and recommends an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment on permafrost.

Event: CBD North Pacific Workshop to Facilitate the Description of EBSAs [viewed]

This regional workshop to facilitate the description of ecologically or biologically significant marine areas (EBSAs) will include one day of training on the application of EBSA criteria and a four-day workshop on, among other issues, describing EBSAs and reviewing and synthesizing relevant scientific data collected through the CBD EBSA repository system and other quality-controlled sources.

11 November 2012: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hosted an event, titled "Wildlife Trafficking and Conservation: A Call to Action,” in Washington, DC, US, on 8 November 2012. The event brought together ambassadors and leaders from international organizations, NGOs and the private sector to energize and strengthen the global commitment to combat illegal trade in wildlife and promote conservation by placing it on the foreign policy and security agenda.
