Ramsar Announces 2012 Award Winners [viewed]

15 November 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) has announced the winners of the 2012 Ramsar Awards. The Awards are granted for wetlands-related work on education, management and science, as well as in recognition of achievement. A special 40th anniversary honorary Ramsar Award also was granted.

SEAFO Agrees on Vulnerable Ecosystems and Port State Measures [viewed]

14 October 2011: The South East Atlantic Fisheries Organization (SEAFO) has adopted a number of conservation measures, making progress on the protection of vulnerable marine ecoystems (VMEs), and the implementation of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Port State Agreement. SEAFO could not reach consensus, however, on a precautionary total allowable catch for the pelagic armourhead.

“Environment for Europe” Ministerial Conference Discusses Water and Green Economy [viewed]

23 September 2011: The seventh “Environment for Europe” Ministerial Conference concluded with the adoption of a Ministerial Declaration titled “Save water, grow green!” Through the Declaration, ministers agree to take the lead in the transition to a green economy and to make substantive contributions to the discussions on green economy within the context of sustainable development, poverty alleviation and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

Forest Policies in Rwanda, US and Gambia Win Future Policy Award [viewed]

21 September 2011: The World Future Council announced the winners of the Future Policy Award, which celebrates policies that create better living conditions and promote just, sustainable and peaceful societies. This year's topic was forests and the gold award was given to Rwanda's forest policy, which is credited with increasing forest cover in the country by 37 percent since 1990.

Ban on Heavy Fuel Oil in Antarctic Enters into Force [viewed]

29 July 2011: The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has reported that a ban on heavy fuel oil from the Antarctic will enter into force on 1 August 2011, and that a new North American Emission Control Area (ECA) will be created. The ban and ECA aim to reduce pollution in the Antarctic region.
