64th Annual Meeting of the International Whaling Commission

The 64th Annual Meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and the associated meetings of its Scientific Committee and other sub-groups will take place in Panama City, Panama from 11 June – 6 July 2012.

36th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee

Outstanding natural and cultural areas to be added to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) World Heritage List will be announced at the next World Heritage Committee meeting. A total of 36 cultural and natural sites will be considered for inscription this year, which marks the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention.

Second Forum on EU Outermost Regions

The EU will hold a forum to address major development issues in the EU Outermost Regions (Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Réunion, Saint Martin, the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands) in light of the Europe 2020 Strategy to promote smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Issues to be addressed include: oceans; agriculture modernization; environmental challenges; social challenges; and jobs, innovation and business competitiveness.

Global Biodiversity Informatics Conference 2012

The Global Biodiversity Informatics Conference (GBIC) aims to discuss how informatics can best meet the challenges posed by biodiversity science and policy. It will focus on the practical steps needed to provide the information needs of global commitments such as the Aichi 2020 targets to halt biodiversity loss. The conference will bring together experts in the fields of biodiversity informatics, genomics, Earth observation, natural history collections, and biodiversity research and policy. Attendance at GBIC will be by invitation only. The outcome will be published in the form of a Global Biodiversity Informatics Outlook (GBIO).

Second Meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the ABS Protocol

The second meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and Equitable Benefit-sharing Arising from their Utilization (ABS), organized by the CBD Secretariat, was orginally scheduled to take place from 9-13 April 2012. It was rescheduled to take place from 2-6 July 2012.

Second Meeting of the IWG on the Mid-term Evaluation of the UNCCD Strategy

The tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) called for the creation of an Intersessional Working Group (IWG) on the mid-term evaluation of the ten year Strategy for the Convention. The IWG is expected to consist of 14 members: the President of the Conference of the Parties (COP); the chairpersons of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC) and of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST); two members from each of five regional groups; and one CSO representative.
