African Workshop Prepares Position for AEWA MOP 5
15 May 2012: The African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) African preparatory workshop to the fifth Meeting of the Parties to the AEWA (MOP 5) helped consolidate common positions on issues of relevance to Africa. The workshop included joint capacity building activities for AEWA and the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).
The meeting took place on 12-13 May 2012, in La Rochelle, France. An independent team facilitated the workshop and provided support for the finalization of the draft AEWA Plan of Action for Africa. The workshop was held in a participatory and interactive manner through discussions and thematic group sessions, according to the CMS, and helped secure active participation in MoP 5.
The meeting was attended by 25 different African countries, represented by CMS and AEWA national focal points. Participants discussed, inter alia, the joint capacity building project in the African region, which is funded through the Strategic Cooperation Agreement (SCA) between the European Commission - DG Environment and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
