CBD, ITPGR Hold Capacity-Building Workshop for ABS
6 June 2011: The Secretariats of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) collaborated in the organization of a capacity building workshop on access and benefit-sharing (ABS), held from 4-5 June 2011, in Montreal, Canada.
The collaboration was based on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two Secretariats, to further enhance collaboration in areas of mutual interest within their mandates. The workshop was organized under the Global Environment Facility's (GEF) Medium-sized Project, aiming to support the early ratification and entry into force of the Nagoya Protocol on ABS.
Participants heard presentations on the activities planned under the GEF project, general party obligations under the Nagoya Protocol, and the ITPGR Multilateral System of ABS. They shared information and experiences on the process and measures planned to meet their obligations under the Protocol, and identified capacity building needs and priorities in relation to implementation of the Protocol.
