CBD West Africa Workshops Build Capacity for NBSAPs, Protected Areas Management
1 June 2011: Two parallel workshops on the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) took place in West Africa, followed by a roundtable meeting on strengthening financing for protected area systems of seven countries in the region.
The regional workshop for West Africa on updating National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and the sub-regional workshop for West Africa on capacity-building for implementation of the CBD programme of work on protected areas convened from 22-26 May 2011, in Dakar, Senegal, organized by the CBD Secretariat. The roundtable meeting on strengthening financing for protected area systems of seven West African countries took place on 27 May 2011.
The workshop on NBSAPs aimed to strengthen national capacities for the development, implementation, reviewing, updating and communication of NBSAPs, and facilitate national implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. A major focus of the workshop was on setting national and regional targets, including integrating biodiversity into relevant national and local planning processes. It also covered the issue of resource mobilization for NBSAP implementation, as well as stakeholder engagement and strategic communication.
The workshop on the work programme on protected areas provided participants with an overview of capacity-building requirements, tools and approaches to implement the work programme. It also aimed to strengthen the skills and knowledge of protected area managers, develop and implement action plans to implement the work programme, and create awareness about funding opportunities.
The roundtable meeting was held in collaboration with the CBD LifeWeb Initiative, and focused on strengthening financing for protected area systems of seven West African countries (Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania, Senegal and Sierra Leone).
