GEF Develops Strategy for Long-Term Environmental Goals

GEF17 October 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has announced the launch of its effort to develop a “GEF 2020 Strategy." The strategy will designate long-term goals for the environment, and seek to position the GEF as an innovator and partner in supporting the achievement of environmental objectives worldwide.

GEF CEO Naoko Ishii, who announced the initiative during the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), said the strategy will support the 2020 Aichi Biodiversity Targets to create global policies with the purposes of: protecting endangered species and threatened ecosystems; expanding protected areas; and promoting a broader understanding of the economic value of biodiversity.

It is expected that the new strategy will provide strengthened support for the incorporation of natural capital valuation in relevant decision-making. [GEF Press Release]
