Switzerland Extends Ramsar Site
28 June 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) has reported that Switzerland has extended its “Les Grangettes” Ramsar Site from 330 hectares to 6,342 hectares. The extension contributes to the goal outlined in the Ramsar Convention's Strategic Plan for 2009-2015 to reach a protected area of 250 million hectares by 2015.
The official extension of the site was celebrated on 19 May 2011, at “Les Grangettes,” with the inauguration of a new floating island for terns and a bird watching tower for visitors. The site extension was implemented with support from Pro Natura Vaud and the Fondation des Grangettes. [Ramsar Press Release]
