Viet Nam Designates its Third Ramsar Site
5 June 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) has reported that the Government of Viet Nam has designated the Ba Be National Park as its third Ramsar Site. The designation was timed to coincide with World Environmental Day and the International Year of Forest 2011.
Ba Be National Park supports the only significant natural mountain lake in Viet Nam. It is the most important wetland in the country's protected area system, because it is the only site with a natural lake surrounded by a mountainous karst ecosystem.
At celebrations held for the listing of the Park, speakers emphasized the important role of forests in economic development and environmental protection, as well as the need for wetland conservation and wise use. [Ramsar Press Release] [Description of Viet Nam's Ramsar Sites]
