World Heritage Centre Signs MOU with French MPA Agency for Indian Ocean Sites
6 July 2012: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has reported that the World Heritage Centre (WHC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the French Marine Protected Area (MPA) Agency (AAMP), in support of the conservation of marine World Heritage sites.
According to UNESCO, the World Heritage Centre and AAMP already cooperate informally, in particular for conservation of marine World Heritage in the Indian Ocean and strengthening the World Heritage marine site managers network. The MOU formalizes this collaboration, and expands it to encompass additional activities, primarily in the Pacific Ocean.
Joint initiatives will focus on improving management capacity in marine World Heritage sites, and assistance to potential new sites in the Pacific region. [UNESCO Press Release]
